Artists' camps

Sydney's artists' camps flourished around the harbour from the 1880s until the 1910s, allowing young artists to live cheaply together and paint their surroundings in the open air.

Boomalli Aboriginal Artists' Cooperative

Formed after a backlash against contemporary Aboriginal art, Boomalli provided Indigenous artists with a space free from external definitions of Aboriginality.

Clint, Alfred

English-born scene painter Alfred Clint both came from and sired an artistic family. His elaborate painted backdrops were a highlight of late nineteenth-century Sydney theatre.

Harriet and Helena Scott

Harriet and Helena Scott were the foremost natural science painters in New South Wales in the second half of the nineteenth century. Their illustrations of native butterflies, moths, plants, reptiles, mammals, shells and flowers, many of which are held by the Australian Museum and Mitchell Library, were scientific and artistic masterpieces that illuminated important scientific publications, and earned them professional recognition in a field of study that was traditionally considered a gentleman's pursuit.

Henry, Lucien

Freed from incarceration in New Caledonia for his revolutionary activities in the Paris Commune, Lucian Henry built a new life in Sydney as an artist, teacher and advocate for native Australian motifs in the decorative arts.

Lindsay, Norman

Lured to Sydney by the editor of The Bulletin, Norman Lindsay later found fame as a painter, etcher and writer. His daring images and bohemian reputation made him notable in staid Sydney, and his home at Springwood has, since his death, become one of Australia's most visited house museums.

Lindsay, Percy

An artist who illustrated for the Bulletin and other Sydney publications, Percy Lindsay was also a painter of Sydney harbour, the Hawkesbury River and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Lindsay, Raymond

Raised in Brisbane, Raymond Lindsay followed his brothers to Sydney in 1921and trained at the Julian Ashton art school. He became a painter of historical paintings, and later an art critic.

Painting Old Sydney

Just over a century ago, a unique collection of paintings opened a window to the urban life of the Rocks and Millers Point before their major transformation. No part of Sydney had been depicted so intensively. The Old Sydney Exhibition succeeded in bringing the loss of Old Sydney to the attention of the public, and so planted the seeds of the heritage conservation movement.

Sydney punchbowl

Painted in the 1810s, from a drawing by John Lewin, the Sydney punchbowl, and others like it, recorded the appearance of the new colony in a durable way.

The Archibald Prize

The Archibald Prize is an institution in the Australian art calendar and an event keenly anticipated every year. It is the source of great debate and controversy and above all, an exhibition the public adores.

Lewin, John William

Australia's first professional artist. A talented artist with an interest in scientific studies, Lewin decided to travel to Australia to paint its natural history. He arrived in Sydney in 1800 and was encouraged by patrons including Governor Philip Gidley King, Governor Lachlan Macquarie, William Paterson and Sir Joseph Banks. He published Australia's first illustrated book 'Birds of New South Wales' in 1813. In 1810 Governor Lachlan Macquarie appointed him to the role of coroner in the town of Sydney and of the County of Cumberland, which he held until his death in 1819. The headstone to his grave was moved from the Devonshire Street Cemetery to Pioneer Memorial Park in Botany Cemetery in 1976.

Mr Walter John Ferguson, born in 1912, interviewed in 1986 for 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900-1960' project, recalls the noted Australian artist Eric Wilson, who lived in Liverpool, and his painting A Game of Draughts

Transcript:
WALTER: In the main street there used to be a chap by the name of Wilson, he was a saddler, and he had one son, I think his name was Eric. He was a pretty good artist. He painted one very good one, and it hung for years in the School of Arts, of Old Bill Ashe and John Grace. They were, I'm not sure, it was that long ago now, whether it was a game of draughts or a game of chess they were playing, and Eric painted this. I know it was shifted, I don't know where it went, and I didn't find out until round about 1956 or 58, could've been a bit later again.

I was working at a place and got to know a young fella in there. He was one of the young Ashe's, Bill's son. I said to him one day, I said 'Was Bill Ashe who used to live in Liverpool your father?' He said 'Yes' I said 'You used to live over near the Clinch's Pond?' He said 'Yes, at the orchard, we had an orchard there'. He said to me, he says 'Did you ever see a painting of Dad's father, my grandfather?' 'Yes', I said, 'It used to hang in the School of Arts'. He said 'That's right',' but, he said 'It don't hang there anymore.' I said '1 knew it went'. He said 'Do you know where it is?' He said 'It's in the National Art Gallery in Canberra'.
